Early Life and Club Career Born in Valence, France, Ruty began his senior club career with SU Agen, one of the most prestigious clubs in French rugby. He quickly established himself as a formidable presence in the second row, known for his physical strength, lineout prowess, and relentless work rate. Ruty was a key figure in the Agen team that enjoyed significant success in the French Championship (Top 14). He was part of the SU Agen squad that won the French Championship title in 1982, defeating Aviron Bayonnais in the final. He also played in several other French Championship finals with Agen, including 1984, 1986, and 1987. Ruty remained a loyal player for SU Agen for over a decade, from 1976 until 1988.

He continued to be a regular feature in the French squad during the 1982 and 1983 Five Nations Championships, where his robust style of play was well-suited to the intense physicality of international rugby.
Playing Style As a lock, Jean-Luc Ruty was primarily known for his power and commitment in the tight five. He was an excellent lineout jumper, providing a crucial attacking and defensive platform for his team. His aggressive rucking and mauling contributed significantly to the forward dominance that characterized both SU Agen and the French national team during his era.
