Jazan Province

Definition
Jazan Province (Arabic: منطقة جازان) is one of the administrative regions (provinces) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, situated in the southwestern part of the country along the Red Sea coast.

Overview
Jazan Province covers an area of approximately 11,670 km² (4,510 sq mi) and, as of the latest official estimates, has a population of around 1.6 million inhabitants. The provincial capital is the city of Jazan (also spelled Jizan), which serves as the economic and political centre. The province shares its southern border with the Republic of Yemen and its western boundary with the Red Sea, giving it a strategic maritime location. The region includes the Farasan Islands, a notable archipelago that is a protected wildlife reserve and a tourist destination.

The province’s economy is diversified. Agriculture is a traditional sector, with the cultivation of tropical fruits (such as mangoes, papayas, and bananas), citrus, coffee, and cereals, facilitated by the relatively higher rainfall in the highlands. Fishing and maritime trade are important along the coast. In recent decades, the Saudi government has promoted industrial development through projects such as the Jazan Economic City, which hosts petrochemical complexes, power generation facilities, and a deep‑water port.

The topography of Jazan Province ranges from coastal plains to the rugged peaks of the Sarawat mountain range, which rise sharply inland. The climate is generally hot and humid along the coast, while the highland areas experience cooler temperatures and receive more precipitation, supporting the region’s agricultural activity.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Jazan” is derived from the Arabic root ج‑ز‑ن (j‑z‑n). While the precise historical origin of the term is not definitively documented, it is commonly understood to refer to the historic town of Jazan, which gave its name to the surrounding region. Some linguistic analyses suggest a meaning related to “separation” or “division,” possibly reflecting the geographic contrast between the coastal and mountainous zones, but this interpretation is not confirmed by authoritative sources.
