Jawahar Bharati College (also known as Jawahar Bharati Degree College or Jawahar Bharati Degree & P.G. College) is a private degree college located in Kavali, Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established in 1951 by the Visvodaya Society under the leadership of Sri Dodla Ramachandra Reddy.
History and Naming The institution was originally founded in 1951 as "Kavali College" with an initial enrollment of 92 students. It was upgraded to a degree college in 1954. In 1965, the college was renamed "Jawahar Bharati Degree College" in honor of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
Affiliation and Accreditation The college was originally affiliated with Andhra University and later with Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. It is currently affiliated with Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU), Nellore. The college is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Courses Offered The college offers undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs across the arts, science, and commerce streams. UG courses include B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. in various combinations. PG courses include M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Physics) and M.C.A. The college also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs, as well as UGC-approved add-on certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma courses.
Student Body and Facilities The student strength is approximately 2,400, with about 40% female students. A significant portion of the student body comes from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The college provides hostel facilities for both men (capacity 1,126) and women (capacity 220). Campus facilities include computer labs, a library, science laboratories, an e-classroom, a biotechnology park, a career guidance and placement cell, a sports complex, medical facilities, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,000.
Notable Alumni Notable individuals associated with the college include Dr. Amara Rama Rao, a scientist in the field of HIV vaccine and immunology, and Dr. Venkateswarlu Chamcha, who works at the Emory Vaccine Center in the USA.
