Javelin (album)

Javelin is the tenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens. It was released on October 6, 2023, through Asthmatic Kitty Records.

Background and Production The album was largely written and recorded by Stevens himself, who also handled the production. It was completed before Stevens was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in the spring of 2023. Javelin is notable for its deeply personal themes and was explicitly dedicated to Stevens's late partner, Evans Richardson IV, who died in April 2023. The album's artwork features a collage of images, including photographs of Richardson.

Musical Style Javelin is characterized by its blend of indie pop, chamber pop, electronic elements, and Stevens's signature folk influences. Critics often noted it as a return to the more lush, orchestral, and intricate soundscapes found in some of his earlier acclaimed works, such as Illinois (2005) and Carrie & Lowell (2015). The album features multi-tracked vocals, complex arrangements, and a rich tapestry of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. It includes ten original tracks and concludes with a cover of Neil Young's "There's a World."

Critical Reception Upon its release, Javelin received widespread critical acclaim. It earned a Metacritic score indicating "universal acclaim," based on numerous reviews from prominent music publications. Critics lauded the album for its emotional depth, exquisite songwriting, and intricate production. Many reviewers highlighted the album's raw vulnerability and the profound exploration of themes such as love, loss, grief, and spiritual longing, often citing it as one of Stevens's most powerful and moving works. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.
