The earliest documentary evidence of a fortified structure at Jaunpils dates to the early 15th century, when the site was part of the holdings of the Livonian Order. During the 16th century, following the secularisation of the Order’s lands, the castle passed into the ownership of local Baltic German nobility. Throughout the early modern period the property changed hands among several aristocratic families, who adapted the medieval fortification for residential use.
In the 19th century, the castle underwent extensive reconstruction that introduced Neo‑Baroque and Historicist elements, reflecting contemporary tastes for romanticized medieval architecture. The building survived both World Wars with relatively minor damage and was nationalised during the Soviet occupation of Latvia. After Latvia regained independence in 1991, the castle was returned to private ownership.

Jaunpils Castle is a compact, rectangular fortified manor house surrounded by a shallow moat. Its core structure retains the layout of a medieval stone keep, featuring thick masonry walls and a central courtyard. The 19th‑century renovations added ornamental stucco façades, enlarged windows, and a mansard roof, which together create a blend of late medieval defensive features and later historicist aesthetics. Interior spaces include a great hall, period fireplaces, and decorative plasterwork typical of Baltic manor houses of the era.
Current Ownership and Use
Since the early 2000s the castle has been operated as a boutique hotel and event venue under private management. The property offers guest accommodations, a restaurant, and facilities for conferences, weddings, and cultural activities. The surrounding grounds include a landscaped park with mature trees and ancillary outbuildings that have been adapted for auxiliary services.

Jaunpils Castle is listed in Latvia’s national heritage register as a protected cultural monument.
