Definition
The Jatiya Oikya Front (Bangla: জাতীয় একতা ফ্রন্ট), translated as the National Unity Front, is a political alliance in Bangladesh formed to contest national elections and present a unified opposition platform against the ruling Awami League.
Overview
The alliance was officially announced on 5 October 2018, ahead of the 2018 Bangladeshi general election. Its principal constituents include the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD), the Bangladesh Jatiya Front (BJF), and several smaller parties and civil society groups. The front was led by Dr. Kamal Hossain, a veteran jurist and former foreign minister, who served as its chief coordinator and presidential candidate. The Jatiya Oikya Front presented a 14-point charter demanding electoral reforms, restoration of civil liberties, and socioeconomic policies aimed at reducing inequality. In the 2018 election, the front secured a limited number of parliamentary seats, with the majority of seats won by the Awami League-led Grand Alliance. The front has continued to function as a platform for opposition coordination, issuing statements on governance issues, human rights, and election integrity.
