Jasper Lake is a small natural lake situated within Jasper National Park in the province of Alberta, Canada. The lake lies on the Athabasca River, approximately 3 km east of the town of Jasper and adjacent to Alberta Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway). It is part of the Rocky Mountains ecosystem and falls within the park’s protected area.
Geography and hydrology
Jasper Lake occupies a shallow basin formed by a widening of the Athabasca River. The lake’s surface area is roughly 0.25 km², and its elevation is about 1,060 m (3,480 ft) above sea level, consistent with the surrounding mountainous terrain. The lake receives inflow primarily from the Athabasca River and discharges back into the same river downstream.
Ecology
The lake and its immediate shoreline provide habitat for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial species. Common fish species include lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus). The surrounding riparian zone supports vegetation such as willows, alders, and sedges, which in turn attract waterfowl and other bird species, making the area a modest site for bird observation.
Recreation and access
Jasper Lake is accessible via a short side road off Highway 16, and a small parking area and trailhead are provided for visitors. The lake is used for low‑impact recreational activities such as picnicking, wildlife viewing, and shoreline fishing. No motorized boating is permitted, in accordance with Jasper National Park regulations aimed at preserving water quality and wildlife habitat.
Management
As part of Jasper National Park, the lake is administered by Parks Canada. Management practices focus on maintaining water quality, protecting wildlife, and ensuring that visitor use does not compromise the lake’s natural values.
Etymology
The name “Jasper” is derived from Jasper Hawes, an early 19th‑century fur trade post manager at nearby Jasper House, which was established in the area in 1813. The lake, like the surrounding town and national park, carries this historical name.
