Jasodhara Bagchi

Jasodhara Bagchi (née Joshi; 21 November 1940 – 10 May 2015) was an Indian scholar, feminist activist, and academic specializing in gender studies, sociology, and literature. She held a professorship at the Department of Sociology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, where she contributed to the development of feminist theory and women's studies in India.

Early Life and Education
Bagchi was born in Shillong, Assam Province, British India. She completed her undergraduate studies in sociology at the University of Delhi and earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Jadavpur University in 1976. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the changing status of women in Bengal, a theme that would recur throughout her scholarly work.

Academic Career
Joining Jadavpur University as a faculty member in the 1970s, Bagchi became a leading figure in the university’s Centre for Women's Studies, established in 1975. She taught courses on feminist theory, social change, and Indian literature, mentoring several generations of scholars in gender studies. Bagchi also served as a visiting professor at institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago.

Research and Publications
Bagchi’s research explored the intersection of gender, class, and cultural norms in South Asian societies. Notable publications include:

  • The Changing Status of Women in Bengal, 1971–1995 (1997) – a comprehensive analysis of socioeconomic transformations affecting women in West Bengal.
  • Society, Culture, and Gender: A Feminist Perspective (2003) – a collection of essays addressing feminist discourse in the Indian context.
  • Gender and the Politics of Development (co‑edited, 2008) – an anthology examining development policies through a gendered lens.

In addition to academic monographs, Bagchi contributed articles to journals such as Economic and Political Weekly, Contributions to Indian Sociology, and Indian Journal of Gender Studies.

Activism and Public Engagement
Beyond academia, Bagchi was actively involved in feminist movements and civil society organizations. She participated in the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) and worked with NGOs focusing on women’s education, health, and legal rights. Bagchi frequently addressed public forums, offering policy recommendations on gender equity and social welfare.

Legacy
Jasodhara Bagchi is regarded as a pioneering figure in Indian feminist scholarship. Her interdisciplinary approach combined sociological analysis with literary criticism, influencing both academic curricula and activist strategies in South Asia. Following her death in 2015, Jadavpur University instituted a memorial lecture series in her honor, continuing to promote research on gender and social justice.
