Janja Šegel

Janja Šegel (born June 17, 2001) is a Slovenian professional swimmer specializing in freestyle events. She represents Slovenia in international competitions and has competed in multiple editions of the Summer Olympic Games.

Šegel first gained international attention as a youth athlete, notably competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 15, where she participated in the women's 4×200 metre freestyle relay. She subsequently represented Slovenia at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021) in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events, and again at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Her competitive record includes significant achievements at the Mediterranean Games. During the 2022 Mediterranean Games held in Oran, Algeria, Šegel won several medals, including gold in the 200-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, as well as silver medals in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.

As of 2024, Šegel holds multiple Slovenian national records in freestyle swimming. She is a member of the Fužinar swimming club based in Ravne na Koroškem. Her career is characterized by her versatility in sprint and middle-distance freestyle disciplines and her consistent presence on the Slovenian national team at European and World Aquatics championships.
