Johannes Guillaume Christianus Andreas "Jan" Marijnissen (born 8 October 1952) is a retired Dutch politician who served as the leader of the Socialist Party (SP) from 1988 to 2008 and as a member of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2010.
Early Life and Education
Marijnissen was born on 8 October 1952 in Oss, in the Dutch province of North Brabant, into a Roman Catholic family. He left secondary school shortly before his final exams and subsequently worked in several factories in and around Oss. He later trained as a welder and worked for ten years in the metal industry.
Political Career
Local Politics
Marijnissen helped found the Socialist Party (SP) in Oss. In 1975, at age 22, he became the youngest municipal councillor in the Netherlands, a position he held until 1993. In 1987, he became the SP's first provincial assembly member, in North Brabant.
Party Leadership
Following the death of Daan Monjé, Marijnissen was selected as Leader of the Socialist Party on 1 October 1986, and became Chairman of the Socialist Party on 20 May 1988. Under his leadership, the SP was transformed from a federation of local branches into a nationally organized party with a clear national programme and profile.
National Politics
In the 1994 general election, Marijnissen served as the party's lijsttrekker (top candidate), and the SP won two seats in the House of Representatives — its first representation in the States General of the Netherlands. He became a Member of the House of Representatives on 17 May 1994 and served as the party's parliamentary leader.
The party's parliamentary seats grew steadily under his leadership: five seats in 1998, nine in 2002, nine in 2003, and a breakthrough of 25 seats (16 gained) in the 2006 election, making the SP the third-largest party in the House of Representatives.
On 20 June 2008, Marijnissen announced his retirement as party leader and parliamentary leader, citing health reasons. He remained a Member of the House of Representatives until after the 2010 general election. He stepped down as Chairman of the Socialist Party on 28 November 2015.
Political Style and Criticism
Marijnissen was noted for his appeal to the "common man" through his use of simple language. He was also credited with presenting the SP as a more social alternative to the Labour Party (PvdA), which had moved toward centrist "Third Way" policies. Critics described his leadership style as authoritarian, citing his tight control over the party.
Personal Life
Marijnissen married Mari-Anne van Schijndel in 1976. His daughter, Lilian Marijnissen, later served as Leader of the Socialist Party (2017–2023).
