Early life and education
Jan Karnowski was born in the village of Wierzyca (then part of the Kingdom of Prussia, now in Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland) into a Kashubian‑speaking family. He attended primary school locally before moving to Toruń, where he completed his secondary education at the Gymnasium (high school). He later studied law at the University of Leipzig, graduating in 1879.

Professional career

He retired from civil service in the early 1920s and continued writing until his death in Gdańsk on 30 August 1931. He was buried at the local Catholic cemetery, where his grave later became a site of commemoration for Kashubian cultural enthusiasts.
