Jamie Dixon

Definition
Jamie Dixon (born June 6, 1965) is an American collegiate basketball coach. He is the head coach of the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs men’s basketball team and previously served as the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 2003 to 2016.

Overview
Born in Bellingham, Washington, Dixon played point guard at Texas Christian University from 1983 to 1987, earning All‑Western Athletic Conference honors. After graduating, he entered the coaching profession, beginning as a graduate assistant under Bobby Knight at the University of Texas (1990–1991) and later serving as an assistant coach at Texas (1991–1995) and Indiana University (1995–1998). Dixon’s first head‑coaching appointment was with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for the 1998–1999 season.

In 1999, he joined the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant coach under Ben Howland. When Howland left for UCLA in 2003, Dixon was promoted to head coach. Over 13 seasons at Pittsburgh, he compiled a 328‑123 record, guided the Panthers to nine NCAA Tournament appearances (including an Elite Eight run in 2009), and captured three consecutive Big East regular‑season titles (2008–2010). Dixon was named Big East Coach of the Year three times (2008, 2009, 2010). He resigned from Pittsburgh in 2016 and, after a brief hiatus, was hired as the head coach of TCU in March 2021.

Etymology/Origin
Jamie is a diminutive form of the name James, which derives from the Hebrew name Yaʿăqōb (“supplanter”). Dixon is an English patronymic surname meaning “son of Dick,” with Dick itself being a medieval diminutive of Richard (from the Germanic elements ric “ruler” and hard “brave, hardy”).
