James Whitbread Lee Glaisher

James Whitbread Lee Glaisher (23 November 1848 – 16 July 1928) was an English mathematician and astronomer noted for his extensive work in number theory, combinatorics, and the theory of elliptic functions. He contributed significantly to the development of mathematical tables and was a prolific editor of mathematical literature.

Early life and education

  • Born in London, England, to James Glaisher, a renowned meteorologist and astronomer, and Margaret Glaisher (née Whitbread).
  • Attended University College School and entered the University of Cambridge in 1866, matriculating at St. John’s College.
  • Graduated as a Wrangler (first-class) in the Mathematical Tripos of 1869.

Academic and professional career

  • Elected a Fellow of St. John’s College, Cambridge, in 1871, where he remained for the rest of his career.
  • Served as the editor of the Mathematical Gazette (1885–1915) and contributed numerous articles to the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society and the Quarterly Journal of Mathematics.

  • Number theory: Glaisher investigated the properties of Bernoulli numbers, Euler–Maclaurin summation, and partition functions. His 1880 paper on the distribution of quadratic residues introduced techniques later refined by Hardy and Littlewood.
  • Elliptic functions: Developed series expansions for elliptic integrals and supplied tables of values that were widely used before the advent of electronic computation.
  • Combinatorics: Published extensive tables of integer partitions and contributed to the theory of q‑series, influencing later work on modular forms.
  • Mathematical tables: Oversaw the production of the Cambridge Mathematical Tables (1891–1904), which provided high‑precision values for logarithms, trigonometric functions, and special functions.
