James Mulwana (c. 1939 – 19 June 2013) was a Ugandan industrialist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, best known as the founder and chairman of the Mulwana Group of Companies, a diversified conglomerate with interests in manufacturing, agriculture, and real estate.
Overview
Born in the Buganda region of what was then the British Protectorate of Uganda, Mulwana began his career in the 1960s, initially working in the civil service before moving into private enterprise. In the late 1970s he established the Mulwana Group, which grew to become one of Uganda’s leading industrial enterprises. The group’s principal companies have included Mulwana Industries (manufacturer of construction materials such as cement and steel reinforcement), Mulwana Agro‑Processing (processor of agricultural commodities), and Mulwana Real Estate.
Mulwana was noted for his role in promoting industrial development and private sector participation in Uganda’s post‑independence economy. He served on various national advisory panels, including the Uganda Manufacturers Association, and was a frequent interlocutor with government officials on policies affecting manufacturing and trade.
Beyond business, Mulwana was a prominent philanthropist. He contributed to health, education, and community development projects, notably supporting the Uganda Cancer Institute, several secondary schools, and local health clinics. His charitable activities were often carried out through the James Mulwana Foundation, established after his death to continue his legacy of giving.
James Mulwana died on 19 June 2013 after a brief illness. At the time of his death, he was regarded as one of Uganda’s most influential private‑sector leaders.
