James MacCullagh

James MacCullagh (1809 – 1847) was an Irish mathematician and physicist noted for his contributions to the mathematical theory of elasticity and optics.

Biography

  • Birth: 28 May 1809, Dublin, Ireland.
  • Education: Attended Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1829 and a Master of Arts in 1832. He later obtained a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) from the same institution in 1840.
  • Academic Career: Served as a lecturer in mathematics at Trinity College Dublin from 1833 to 1842. In 1842 he was appointed as the Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College.

Scientific Contributions

  1. Theory of Elasticity

    • In his 1839 paper “On the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity,” MacCullagh introduced a formulation of elasticity that expressed the strain energy density in terms of the first and second invariants of the strain tensor. This work laid foundational aspects for later developments in continuum mechanics.
  2. Optics and Light Propagation

    • MacCullagh proposed a mechanical model of the ether in which the velocity of light depends on the state of stress in the medium. His formulation, sometimes referred to as MacCullagh’s formula, linked the permittivity and permeability of a medium to its elastic constants. Although later superseded by electromagnetic theory, it represented a significant attempt to unify optics with mechanics.
  3. Mathematical Works

    • Published several papers in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy on topics including differential equations, potential theory, and the geometry of curves.

Recognition

  • Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1840.
