Jakob Rosanes

  • Biography Rosanes was born in Brody, Galicia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire (now Ukraine). He began his higher education at the University of Lemberg (now Lviv) before moving to the University of Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), where he completed his doctorate in 1865. After habilitating in 1870, Rosanes became a Privatdozent at the University of Breslau. His career progressed steadily, leading to his appointment as an extraordinary professor in 1876 and a full professor in 1884. He served as the Rector of the University of Breslau from 1903 to 1904, a testament to his standing within the academic community. He retired from his professorship in 1913.

  • Contributions Rosanes' research primarily centered on algebraic geometry and invariant theory. He made important advancements in the study of algebraic curves and surfaces, particularly focusing on their invariants under various transformations. His work involved the detailed analysis of configurations of points and linear systems of curves on surfaces. He also contributed to the theory of higher-order differential forms and their associated invariants. His academic papers were published in leading mathematical journals of his era, influencing the development of these fields.
