Jaime de Marichalar y Sáenz de Tejada (born 7 April 1963) is a Spanish nobleman, former royal consort, and businessman. He is the former husband of Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo, the eldest daughter of King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Through his marriage, he held the courtesy title of Duke of Lugo from 1995 until their separation and subsequent divorce.
Early life and education
- Born in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Spain, to Jaime de Marichalar y Briones and María del Pilar Sáenz de Tejada y Varela.
- He is a member of the Spanish aristocratic family Marichalar, which holds the title of Marquess of Griñón.
- Marichalar attended the Jesuit school Colegio del Pilar in Madrid and later studied journalism at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, earning a degree in audiovisual communication.
Career
- Early in his career he worked as a television presenter and journalist, notably for the Spanish public broadcaster TVE and the private channel Telecinco.
- He later transitioned to business, holding executive positions in various companies, including roles in the shipping and tourism sectors.
- As of the 2020s, he has been involved in the management of family-owned enterprises and holds seats on several corporate boards.
Marriage and family
- On 18 March 1995, Marichalar married Infanta Elena, Princess of Asturias, in a civil ceremony at the Royal Palace of Madrid, followed by a religious ceremony at the Almudena Cathedral.
- The couple were granted the titles Duke and Duchess of Lugo upon marriage, a ducal title associated with the Galician town of Lugo.
- They have two children:

- Victoria Federica de Marichalar y de Borbón (born 9 September 2000)
Separation and divorce
- Marichalar and Infanta Elena announced their separation in 2007, citing personal differences.
- The formal divorce was finalized in 2009. Following the divorce, the ducal title of Lugo reverted solely to Infanta Elena, as per Spanish royal protocol.
