Definition
Jagdstaffel 37 (commonly abbreviated as Jasta 37) was a fighter squadron of the Luftstreitkräfte, the aerial arm of the Imperial German Army during the First World War.
Overview
Jasta 37 was formed on 30 June 1917 and commenced combat operations on 1 August 1917. Throughout its existence, the unit operated on the Western Front, being reassigned several times to different army detachments (Armee‑Abteilungen) in response to shifting front‑line requirements. The squadron remained active until the armistice on 11 November 1918, after which it was demobilised along with the rest of the German air service. Over the course of the war, Jasta 37 is credited with a modest number of aerial victories, contributing to the overall German effort to contest Allied air superiority.
Etymology/Origin
The German word Jagdstaffel translates literally as “hunting squad” or “fighter squadron.” The term combines Jagd (“hunt” or “hunt‑down”) and Staffel (“squadron” or “flight”). The numeral “37” designates the unit’s sequential order within the series of fighter squadrons created by the German military, the first being Jagdstaffel 1.
