Jafar (Aladdin)

Definition
Jafar is a fictional character who serves as the primary antagonist in Disney's 1992 animated feature film Aladdin and its subsequent media adaptations.

Overview
Jafar is portrayed as the Grand Vizier to the Sultan of Agrabah, the fictional Arabian city-state where the story takes place. Secretly harboring ambitions of absolute power, he seeks to obtain the magical Lamp containing the Genie in order to become ruler of Agrabah. Throughout the film, Jafar employs manipulation, sorcery, and political intrigue to achieve his goals. He ultimately transforms into a powerful sorcerer after acquiring the Genie’s lamp but is defeated by Aladdin and the Genie. The character reappears in the direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar (1994), the television series Aladdin (1994–1995), and the 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin, where he is portrayed by Marwan Kenzari.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Jafar” (also transliterated as Jaʿfar) is of Arabic origin. In Arabic, the name means “stream” or “small river,” and is historically associated with several notable figures, including early Islamic scholars. The character’s name was chosen by Disney writers to evoke an exotic, Middle‑Eastern resonance consistent with the setting of Agrabah.
