Definition
Jacopo Vignali (1592 – 23 May 1660) was an Italian painter of the early Baroque period, active primarily in Florence. He is noted for his religious and mythological compositions, as well as fresco work for churches and palaces.
Overview
Born in Florence, Vignali trained under the prominent Florentine artist Matteo Rosselli. He became a member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in 1621 and later served as its director. Vignali’s career was closely linked to the patronage of the Medici family and various ecclesiastical commissions. His oeuvre includes altarpieces, canvas paintings, and large-scale fresco cycles, many of which adorn Florentine churches such as Santa Maria del Carmine and San Marco. He also taught a number of younger painters, among them Francesco Furini, Cesare Dandini, and Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi, thereby influencing the development of Florentine Baroque art.
Etymology/Origin
- Jacopo is the Italian equivalent of the name Jacob, derived from the Hebrew “Yaʿaqōb” meaning “supplanter” or “holder of the heel.”
- Vignali is an Italian surname likely originating from the word “vigna” (vineyard), suggesting a familial association with viticulture or a locale characterized by vineyards.
Characteristics
- Style: Vignali’s paintings exhibit the dramatic chiaroscuro and dynamic composition typical of the Baroque, tempered by a graceful lyricism inherited from the late-Mannerist tradition of Florence.
- Subject Matter: Predominantly religious subjects (e.g., saints, biblical scenes) and classical mythology, often rendered for devotional settings.
- Technique: Skilled in both oil on canvas and fresco, Vignali employed rich, saturated colors and careful modelling of figures to convey emotional intensity.
- Notable Works:
- St. Michael and the Devil (c. 1625, Uffizi, Florence)
- The Virgin and Child with Saints (c. 1630, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence)
- Moses in the Desert (c. 1640, Palazzo Pitti, Florence)
- Fresco cycle of the Life of St. Francis (c. 1650, San Marco, Florence)
