Definition
Jacob Matlala (1962 – 2013) was a South African professional boxer who competed primarily in the mini flyweight (minimumweight) division and held multiple world championships during his career.
Overview
Born on 29 June 1962 in South Africa, Matlala began his professional boxing career in 1978 and remained active until his retirement in 2007. He achieved international recognition by capturing the World Boxing Council (WBC) mini flyweight title in 1993, a title he defended several times before losing it in 1995. He subsequently secured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) mini flyweight title, becoming one of the few South African boxers to hold world titles in two major sanctioning bodies. Known by the nickname “Baby Jake” due to his short stature (approximately 5 ft 2 in or 158 cm), Matlala was celebrated for his speed, technical skill, and resilience inside the ring. After retiring, he worked as a trainer and mentor for younger South African boxers. Matlala passed away on 13 April 2013 following a heart attack.
