John “Jack” Coghill (November 25, 1925 – February 13, 2009) was an American politician and businessman who was active in Alaskan state politics. A member of the Republican Party, Coghill served in both chambers of the Alaska Legislature, holding seats in the Alaska House of Representatives (1965–1967) and the Alaska Senate (1975–1979). He is most prominently known for his tenure as the 6th Lieutenant Governor of Alaska, serving from December 1990 to December 1994 alongside Governor Walter J. “Wally” Hickel.
Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Coghill was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Forces. After the war, he pursued a career in the private sector, including involvement in the construction and oil industries, which contributed to his reputation as a businessman in the state.
During his legislative career, Coghill was recognized for advocating fiscal conservatism and supporting resource development policies. As lieutenant governor, he presided over the Alaska Senate and played a role in the administration’s efforts to manage the state’s oil revenue and budgetary matters.
Coghill’s political activities extended beyond elected office; he was involved in various civic and community organizations within Alaska. He passed away in Anchorage, Alaska, at the age of 83.
