Jaanus Nõgisto (born 21 January 1956 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian guitarist, composer, music‑television director and producer. He has been active in both the popular‑music scene—most notably as a member of the seminal rock band Ruja—and in Estonian broadcast media, where he has overseen numerous music‑and‑entertainment programmes.
Early life and education
Nõgisto completed his secondary schooling at Tallinn 37 Secondary School with an emphasis on film history. He then attended the Pedagogical Institute of Culture (now the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Education) in Tallinn, graduating in 1978 with a diploma in directing for theatre and television (cum laude).
Music career
- Aatomitriikraud (1972‑1973) – early rock group.
- Ruja (1973‑1988) – guitarist; contributed to the band’s development of progressive‑rock that became a cornerstone of Estonian popular music.
- In Spe (1980‑1982) – experimental ensemble.
- Other projects include Con Amores B (1985) and Led R (2003).
Through these groups Nõgisto participated in recording, songwriting and live performance, influencing the Estonian rock scene of the 1970s and 1980s.
Television and film work
After obtaining his directing diploma, Nõgisto joined Eesti Televisioon (ETV) as an assistant director for music programmes. In August 1982 he became the director of music‑ and entertainment‑programme production at ETV, later holding chief‑director positions at both ETV and TV3. His television credits include:

Nõgisto has also directed documentary films, including titles on the Tallinna Kammerorkester, the sailing heritage of Estonia, and various cultural subjects.
In 2000 he founded his own production company, Reklaamirebased, under which he continues to produce television content and music projects.
Awards and honors
- Order of the White Star, V Class (2012), awarded by the President of Estonia for contributions to culture.
Personal life
Nõgisto is an avid sailor and has taken part in several regattas. He is married and has three children: sons Jan Erik, Joonatan and Robin, and a daughter Roosi Natali.
