JSC RMG Copper

JSC RMG Copper (Joint Stock Company RMG Copper) is a major mining and metallurgical enterprise located in the Bolnisi Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region, Georgia. It is a primary producer of copper concentrate, gold, and silver in the country.

Corporate Structure and Ownership The company operates as a Joint Stock Company (JSC). It is a subsidiary of Rich Metals Group (RMG), a diversified international mining group. The ultimate beneficial ownership of Rich Metals Group has been associated with Russian business interests, specifically linked to the Gutseriev family (via Safmar Group structures), though corporate structures involving offshore jurisdictions have been noted in public reporting.

Operations The company's primary assets include:

  • Madneuli Mine: An open-pit copper-barite-polymetallic deposit. It is one of the largest copper deposits in the Caucasus region. The ore body contains copper, gold, silver, barite, and sulfur.
  • David Gareji (formerly Sakdrisi) Mine: A gold-polymetallic deposit located near the Madneuli complex.
  • Processing Plant: A flotation processing plant located at the Madneuli site with a design capacity to process several million tonnes of ore per annum. The plant produces copper concentrate (containing gold and silver credits) and barite concentrate.

Production JSC RMG Copper is one of Georgia's largest exporters. Its primary commercial product is copper concentrate, which is shipped to smelters internationally (historically including destinations in Europe and Asia). Gold and silver are recovered as by-products within the copper concentrate. Barite concentrate is also produced for the oil and gas drilling industry.

Economic Significance The enterprise is a significant contributor to the Georgian economy, representing a substantial portion of the country's mineral exports and industrial output. It is a major employer in the Kvemo Kartli region, providing jobs for several thousand workers (including contractors).

Environmental and Social Context The company's operations have been subject to public scrutiny and regulatory oversight regarding environmental impact. Key issues historically raised by NGOs, local communities, and government agencies include:

  • Water Pollution: Discharge of heavy metals and acid mine drainage into the Mashavera and Khrami river systems.
  • Air Quality: Dust emissions from the open pit, waste dumps, and processing plant.
  • Tailings Management: Stability and seepage from tailings storage facilities.
  • Cultural Heritage: Operations near the Sakdrisi-Kachagiani archaeological site (considered one of the world's oldest gold mines) sparked significant controversy and legal proceedings regarding the preservation of the site versus mining expansion.

The company has undertaken various modernization and environmental remediation projects, including the construction of water treatment facilities and dust suppression systems, often cited as requirements for compliance with Georgian environmental legislation and international lending standards (such as those of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which has previously financed the group).

History Mining at the Madneuli deposit dates back to the Soviet era (operations began in the 1970s under the name "Madneuli Mining Combine"). Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the asset went through various privatization stages. The current corporate iteration under the "RMG" brand was established after the acquisition of the asset by Rich Metals Group (formerly GeoProMining) in the mid-2000s. Significant investment followed to modernize the processing plant and expand the open pit.
