Constructed in 1888, the building is a significant example of Romanesque Revival architecture and is known for its distinctive red brick, rusticated stone detailing, and arched windows. It was designed by the prominent local architectural firm Adams and Alsup.
The building is named after its original owner, J. A. Fritsch, a notable merchant and businessman in Chattanooga during the late 19th century. Fritsch operated a grocery business from the block.
