The J-Bay Open 2016 was a professional surfing competition held at Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The event was the sixth stop on the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) Men’s Championship Tour. The official competition window ran from July 6 to July 17, 2016, at the "Supertubes" break, which is recognized for its long, fast, right-hand point break waves.
The 2016 edition was marked by the return of Australian surfer Mick Fanning to the venue following his widely publicized encounter with a shark during the final of the 2015 J-Bay Open. Fanning ultimately won the 2016 event, defeating Hawaii’s John John Florence in the final heat. Fanning’s winning two-wave total was 17.70, while Florence finished with a score of 17.13.
The competition involved a field of 36 surfers, comprising the world’s top-ranked professionals and several wildcard entries. The semi-finalists of the event were Josh Kerr and Filipe Toledo. Throughout the tournament window, several "lay days" were called due to insufficient swell or unfavorable wind conditions before the final rounds were contested in high-quality surf. Fanning’s victory at the J-Bay Open 2016 was his fourth career win at the Jeffreys Bay location, tying him for the record of most event wins at the site at that time.
