Jörgen Mårtensson (born 4 December 1959) is a Swedish former orienteer who is regarded as one of the most successful competitors in the sport’s history. Competing at the elite level for over two decades, he achieved numerous international and national titles.
World Orienteering Championships
Mårtensson won two individual gold medals in the long‑distance event at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC): in 1991 at Mariánské Lázně, Czechoslovakia, and in 1995 at Detmold, Germany. In addition, he earned five silver medals (relay in 1981, 1985, 1989; individual short distance in 1995; individual long distance in 1993) and two bronze medals (relay in 1987 and 1995). His participation in WOC spanned from his debut in 1978, when he placed eighth in the individual race, through his final appearance in 1997.
Other Major Competitions
Mårtensson won the prestigious five‑day O‑Ringen competition three times (1981, 1996, and 1997). He was a member of the winning Swedish teams in the Jukola relay in 1981, 1984, and 1985. Domestically, he claimed the Swedish marathon title at the Stockholm Marathon in 1993, illustrating his versatility as both an orienteer and long‑distance runner.
