Jörg Asmussen (born 7 July 1963) is a German economist and public official who has held senior positions in both national and European financial institutions. He served as State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Finance from 2005 to 2009, after which he was elected to the Bundestag as a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), serving from 2009 until his appointment to the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2012. As a member of the ECB Executive Board, Asmussen was responsible for overseeing the bank’s market operations, financial stability, and monetary policy implementation until his resignation in 2014. Following his ECB tenure, he assumed the role of chief economist at the European Investment Bank (EIB), where he contributed to the analysis of investment policy and economic research. In later years, Asmussen has been involved with various advisory boards and think‑tanks focusing on finance, economics, and European integration. His career is noted for contributions to fiscal policy, monetary policy coordination within the Eurozone, and the development of European financial governance structures.
