József Dancsó (born 17 November 1969 in Orosháza, Hungary) is a Hungarian economist and politician. He served as a member of the National Assembly of Hungary from 1998 to 2014, representing Békés County, and held the mayoralty of his hometown Orosháza between 2010 and 2014. Dancsó has occupied senior positions in the public sector, notably as President of the Hungarian State Treasury (2014–2017) and as a member of the Monetary Council of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (National Bank of Hungary) from 2023 onward.
Education and early career
Dancsó graduated from the Budapest University of Economics (now Corvinus University of Budapest) in 1993 with a degree in finance and commerce. He began his professional life in the banking sector, working as chief loan officer at Konzumbank’s Orosháza branch, followed by positions at the Commercial and Credit Bank (Kereskedelmi és Hitelbank) and OTP Bank, where he served as director of the Szeged directorate (1998–2004) and later as an adviser to the chairman‑CEO.
Political career
Affiliated with the Fidesz party, Dancsó entered parliamentary politics in 1998, first as a list MP for Békés County and later as the constituency MP for Orosháza (2010–2014). During his tenure he was a member of the Committee on the State Audit Office and Budget. He was elected mayor of Orosháza in the 2010 local elections and served until 2014.
Public‑sector leadership
In February 2014, Dancsó was appointed President of the Hungarian State Treasury, a role he held until November 2017, overseeing the management of state cash and debt operations. Subsequent positions included Deputy Chief Financial Officer of the Hungarian Export‑Import Bank (Eximbank) until 2022, advisory work at the Ministry of Regional Development, and Deputy Chief Financial Officer of the Digital Hungary Agency (from February 2023). In January 2025 he assumed a similar financial leadership role at Pro‑M Professional Mobile and Network Services.
Monetary Council
Since 2023, Dancsó has been a member of the Monetary Council of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, contributing to the bank’s monetary‑policy deliberations and oversight of financial stability.
Other activities and recognitions
Dancsó holds specialized certificates in Russian (upper level) and English (intermediate level). He has served on the boards of several state‑owned enterprises, including Volánbusz and MÁV Start Railway Passenger Transport Company, and on the supervisory boards of cultural institutions such as the New Theatre (Új Színház) and MVM Net. He co‑authored a university textbook on banking operations and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Corvinus University. His contributions have been recognized with the County Award of Békés and the honorary citizenship of Orosháza.
