Józef Kustroń

Definition
Józef Kustroń (20 March 1892 – 16 September 1939) was a Polish military officer who attained the rank of brigadier general and commanded the Carpathian Army (Armia Karpaty) during the 1939 Invasion of Poland.

Overview
Born in the village of Brzostek, then part of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire (present‑day Poland), Kustroń completed secondary education before being conscripted into the Austro‑Hungarian army during World War I. After the war he joined the newly formed Polish Armed Forces, serving with the Polish Legions and taking part in the Polish–Soviet War (1919‑1921).

In the interwar period he held a series of staff and command posts, including command of the 1st Legions Infantry Regiment and later the 21st Mountain Infantry Division. He was promoted to colonel in 1925 and to brigadier general (generał brygady) in 1938. In early 1939 he was appointed commander of the Carpathian Military District, which was reorganised as the Carpathian Army for defensive operations against a possible German attack from the south.

During the September Campaign, the Carpathian Army defended the southern border of Poland against the German 14th Army. After initial engagements in the Bieszczady Mountains, Kustroń’s forces withdrew towards the San River, where they participated in a series of delaying battles. On 16 September 1939, while attempting to break through encircling German forces near the village of Bircza (Sanok County), Kustroń was killed in action. His death occurred during the early phase of the campaign and he was one of the highest‑ranking Polish officers to fall in combat.

Kustroń was posthumously awarded several honours, including the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari, the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and multiple Crosses of Valor.
