Ján Solovič

Ján Solovič (8 March 1934 – 10 July 2022) was a prominent Slovak playwright, screenwriter, and dramaturg. He is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Slovak drama during the second half of the 20th century, known for his ability to capture contemporary social issues, psychological depth, and moral dilemmas.

Biography

Born in Martin, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), Ján Solovič completed his studies in dramaturgy at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava in 1957. After graduation, he began his career as a dramaturg at the Slovak National Theatre (SND) in Bratislava. He later worked as a dramaturg for Slovak Television and served as the head of the dramaturgy department at the Nová scéna theatre in Bratislava. His extensive experience in theatrical institutions deeply informed his writing, giving him a keen understanding of stagecraft and audience engagement.
