Ivan Artemyev is a name shared by at least two notable Russian historical figures.
1. Ivan Timofeevich Artemyev (1895–1968) — Russian football player and one of the founders of FC Spartak Moscow. Born in August 1895 in Lobkovo, Ryazan Province, he lived in the Presnya district of Moscow during the Russian Revolution. He played a leading role in organizing sporting activities in the district, which was one of the most ardently revolutionary areas of Moscow. The Moscow Sports Circle was formed in 1921, and by 1922 it had opened a stadium on a former potato field. He died on 18 October 1968 in Moscow.
2. Ivan Timofeevich Artemyev (1917–1944) — Hero of the Soviet Union. Born on 14 October 1917 in the village of Azovka (now part of the city of Bobrov, Voronezh Oblast) into a peasant family. He completed incomplete secondary education and tractor-driving courses in 1935, working on a collective farm. He joined the Red Army in 1938.
During the Soviet-Finnish War (1939–1940), Artemyev served as a machine gunner in the 69th Rifle Regiment of the 97th Rifle Division, 13th Army, Northwestern Front. On 12 March 1940, on the island of Musti-Saari northeast of Vyborg, he repelled several night counterattacks with his machine gun fire. When ammunition ran out, he used grenades, destroying over 30 enemy soldiers and officers. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 7 April 1940, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (Gold Star No. 84) with the Order of Lenin.
In 1941, he graduated from the Kachin Military Aviation School and became a flight commander in the Soviet Air Force. During the Great Patriotic War (World War II), he served as a lieutenant and aviation flight commander. On 25 June 1944, he was killed in an air battle near Tolochin, Vitebsk Region, Byelorussian SSR. He was buried in the village of Zabolotye, Tolochin District, where an obelisk was erected at his grave. He was a member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) from 1942 and was also awarded the Order of the Red Star.
