Istočna Ilidža (literally “East Ilidža”) is a municipality located within the city of Istočno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo) in the entity of Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It forms part of the greater Sarajevo metropolitan area and lies to the east of the pre‑war municipality of Ilidža, which is now part of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Geography
The municipality borders the municipalities of Ilidža (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) to the west, Istočno Novo Sarajevo to the north, and the municipality of Vogošća to the south. Its terrain is characterized by a mixture of residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and surrounding forested hills that are typical of the Sarajevo basin.
Administrative status
Istočna Ilidža was established as a separate administrative unit following the Dayton Peace Agreement (1995), which divided the pre‑war municipality of Ilidža between the two political entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of six constituent municipalities of the city of Istočno Sarajevo. The municipal seat is the settlement also named Istočna Ilidža.
Demographics
According to the 2013 census of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the municipality had a population of approximately 14,739 inhabitants. The population is predominantly composed of ethnic Serbs, reflecting the demographic patterns of Republika Srpska.
Economy and infrastructure
The local economy is primarily service‑oriented, with a number of small‑to‑medium enterprises operating in retail, hospitality, and construction. The municipality is served by the Sarajevo–Ploče railway line and is connected to the wider Sarajevo area via a network of municipal roads and public transport lines.
Education and culture
Istočna Ilidža maintains several primary schools and a secondary school that serve the local community. Cultural activities are organized at the municipal cultural centre, which hosts events, exhibitions, and workshops that promote regional heritage.
