Definition
Isøyane is a small archipelago of islands located off the western coast of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway.
Overview
The island group lies in Wedel Jarlsberg Land, north of the Dunøyane islands, and extends approximately 3.5 nautical miles (about 6.5 km) as a continuation of the middle moraine ridge of the glacier Torellbreen. The islands are uninhabited and form part of the Arctic Ocean region. The largest island in the group is Nordre Isøya, while the northernmost islet is called Aurholmen. Further south, a cluster of skerries and islets known as Isøyskjera is attached to the archipelago.
Nordre Isøya and the nearby islet Isøykalven are designated as a bird reserve, with access restrictions to protect nesting seabirds. The area was also designated as a Ramsar wetland site on 24 July 1985 (Reference no. 316), recognizing its importance for waterfowl and other wildlife.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Isøyane” derives from Norwegian, where is means “ice” and øyane is the definite plural form of øy (“island”). Thus, Isøyane translates literally as “the ice islands,” a reference to the islands’ proximity to glacial ice and their formation from glacial moraine material.
