Ironbar Bassey (born 25 December 1965), also known as Bassey Etim Ironbar, is a Nigerian former weightlifter who competed in the men's super heavyweight event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Early life and athletic career
Born on 25 December 1965, Ironbar Bassey first gained recognition as a weightlifter at the 1981 Lagos Sports Festival, where he won a gold medal, and won another gold at the National Festival of Sports in Benin City that same year. He went on to compete at the African Weightlifting Championships in Port Said, Egypt, where he won three gold medals.
At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia, he won a bronze medal in the men's super heavyweight (+110 kg) category.
Olympic participation
Bassey represented Nigeria at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the men's super heavyweight event. During the clean and jerk portion of the competition, he sustained a leg injury that ended his Olympic participation and ultimately his professional weightlifting career. He did not record a successful lift in the competition.
Later life and community service
Following his career-ending injury, Bassey spent much of his income on medical treatment. He later moved to the Ajah-Badore suburb of Lagos, where he began performing voluntary community service. He became known for filling potholes, clearing debris from blocked sewers, sweeping streets, and directing traffic in the area, often starting work as early as 4:00 a.m. His efforts earned him the local nickname "Number One."
In 2021, his story gained international attention through an Inter Press Service report. In 2024, Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu arranged for his rehabilitation and offered him employment in the state's Ministry of Sports.
