Ironai Station

Ironai Station (色内駅, Ironai-eki) was a railway station located in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. It served a branch line of the Hakodate Main Line, which was operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR). The station, primarily serving local passengers and freight in the port area of Otaru, was closed in 1985 as part of JNR's rationalization efforts.

History

  • September 21, 1912: The station first opened as a freight station by Japanese Government Railways (JGR).
  • April 1, 1915: Passenger services commenced, serving the local population and workers in the Otaru port district.
  • 1949: Following the privatization of JGR, the station became part of Japanese National Railways (JNR).
  • November 1, 1985: Ironai Station, along with the entire Otaru-Chikkō Freight Line (小樽築港臨港線) segment between Otaru-Chikkō and Otaru-Kō, was closed due to declining usage and JNR's financial restructuring.

Lines

At the time of its closure, Ironai Station was served by a branch line of the Hakodate Main Line. Specifically, it was located on the Otaru-Chikkō Freight Line, which ran from Otaru-Chikkō to Otaru-Kō.

Station Layout

During its operational period, Ironai Station was a simple local station. It likely featured a single side platform to handle passenger traffic, alongside tracks for freight operations given its initial purpose. Specific details about the exact layout are limited due to its age and closure.

Adjacent Stations

At the time of its closure in 1985, the adjacent stations on the branch line were:

  • Otaru-Chikkō (towards Hakodate Main Line connection)
  • Otaru-Kō (小樽港駅) (terminus of the branch line)

Surrounding Area

Ironai Station was situated in the historic port area of Otaru, near the Otaru Canal. This area was once a bustling center for trade and industry, characterized by warehouses and shipping facilities. Although the station no longer exists, the surrounding district remains a significant historical and tourist destination in Otaru, known for its preserved architecture and canal.
