Description
Iridomyrmex alpinus is a medium‑sized ant typical of the genus Iridomyrmex. Workers are monomorphic, measuring approximately 4–5 mm in length. The exoskeleton is smooth and glossy, with a predominant brown to dark brown coloration. The mandibles are relatively short and triangular, and the antennae comprise 12 segments ending in a distinct 3‑segmented club. Like other dolichoderine ants, the species lacks a functional sting and possesses a single petiole node.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from alpine and sub‑alpine regions of southeastern Australia, particularly the Snowy Mountains and the Kosciuszko National Park. It is adapted to cold, moist environments and is typically found in soils under stones, moss beds, and among leaf litter at elevations above 1,200 m.
Ecology and Behavior
- Foraging: Workers forage primarily on the ground surface, collecting a variety of food resources including small arthropods, honeydew from hemipteran insects, and plant-derived detritus.
- Colony Structure: Colonies are relatively small compared to some congeners, with a modest number of workers and a single queen (monogyne).
- Thermoregulation: Observations suggest activity peaks during the warmer parts of the day when temperatures rise above 5 °C, indicating physiological adaptation to cold climates.
Conservation Status
There is currently no specific conservation assessment for Iridomyrmex alpinus. Its restriction to high‑elevation habitats could make it susceptible to climate change, but formal evaluations have not been published.
