Located in southeastern Texas, Iowa Colony lies approximately 30 mi southwest of downtown Houston and about 10 mi north of the Gulf of Mexico coastline. The city was incorporated on May 24 1973. According to the 2020 United States Census, its population was 8,154, reflecting rapid growth in the early 21st century; estimates published by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2023 placed the population near 12,000. Iowa Colony is governed by a mayor‑council form of government, with a city council consisting of five members elected at large.

Geographically, the city covers an area of roughly 3.5 sq mi (9.1 km²), all of which is land. The terrain is characteristic of the Gulf Coastal Plains, featuring flat to gently rolling land and a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and abundant precipitation.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Iowa Colony” derives from a settlement established in the late 19th century by a group of migrants from the state of Iowa. These settlers promoted the area as a “colony” for fellow Iowans seeking agricultural opportunities in Texas. The designation was retained when the community was formally incorporated as a city.
