InkBall

Definition
InkBall is a puzzle video game developed by Microsoft and included with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 and Windows Vista. The game challenges players to guide colored balls into matching-colored holes by drawing lines with a stylus or mouse.

Overview
Released in August 2004, InkBall is a single‑player title that combines elements of physics‑based puzzles and time‑management. Players earn points for correctly directing balls, preserving remaining time, and breaking special blocks. The game ends when the timer expires or a ball enters a hole of the wrong color (except gray, which is neutral). InkBall was removed from later Windows releases and is not available on versions beyond Windows Vista.

Etymology / Origin
The name “InkBall” reflects the core mechanic: the player “writes” (ink) lines that influence the motion of balls on the screen. The title was coined by Microsoft during development of the game for inclusion with its Tablet PC platform, emphasizing the stylus‑oriented interaction.

Characteristics

  • Gameplay Mechanics – Players draw straight lines that act as barriers, redirecting moving balls toward target holes. Different colored balls must reach holes of the same color; gray balls and gray holes have no effect on scoring.
  • Scoring System – Points are awarded for each correctly placed ball, for remaining time at the end of a round, and for destroying certain blocks.
  • Difficulty Levels – The game offers five levels: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. Higher levels reduce the available time and increase the complexity of block arrangements and ball trajectories.
  • Special Blocks – Some blocks break on impact, open and close periodically, change a ball’s color, or accelerate its speed, adding strategic depth.
  • Controls & Compatibility – On Windows XP Tablet PC Edition a pen tablet was required; the mouse cursor was hidden unless Alt was pressed twice. In Windows Vista the game could be played comfortably with a mouse. InkBall does not run on Windows 7 or later.
  • Reception – The game has been noted for its challenging nature. It was ranked 14th among Microsoft‑included Windows games by How‑To‑Geek, and GameSpot highlighted difficulty when using a mouse on early Vista builds.
