Indigofera howellii

Indigofera howellii, commonly known as Howell's indigo or Howell's false indigo, is a species of flowering plant in the legume family, Fabaceae (or Leguminosae). It is native to the southeastern United States.

Description

Indigofera howellii typically grows as a perennial herb or subshrub, reaching heights of 30 to 100 centimeters (1 to 3 feet). Its stems are often woody at the base and are covered with short, appressed (lying flat against the surface) hairs, giving the plant a somewhat grayish appearance.

  • Leaves: The leaves are odd-pinnately compound, meaning they have an odd number of leaflets arranged along a central stem, with a single leaflet at the tip. Each leaf consists of 7 to 13 (sometimes up to 17) small, oval to obovate leaflets, typically 1-2 cm long. The leaflets are grayish-green due to a covering of fine, silvery hairs.
  • Flowers: The distinctive pea-like flowers, characteristic of the Fabaceae family, are borne in axillary racemes. These flower clusters typically measure 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6 inches) long. The individual flowers range in color from pink to reddish-purple. Blooming generally occurs from spring through summer.
  • Fruit: The fruit is a small, straight, cylindrical pod, approximately 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 inches) long, which is typically covered with short hairs. Each pod contains several small seeds.

Habitat and Distribution

Indigofera howellii is endemic to the southeastern United States, primarily found in Florida and Georgia. It thrives in well-drained, sandy soils and is a characteristic component of various open, sunny habitats. These include pine flatwoods, sandhills, scrublands, dry hammocks, and open woodlands. It prefers environments that receive ample sunlight and are not subject to prolonged inundation.

Indigofera howellii belongs to the genus Indigofera, which is known for its diverse species, some of which are historically significant for producing indigo dye.

Conservation Status

While not globally listed as threatened, the conservation status of Indigofera howellii can vary significantly within its localized range. In some specific counties or states where it occurs, it may be considered rare or of conservation concern. Factors such as habitat loss due to development, land conversion, and fragmentation can impact local populations, leading to listings such as "critically imperiled" (S1) or "imperiled" (S2) in particular regions.
