Indian Ink (horse)

Indian Ink (foaled 2 March 2004) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. A classic winner, she was best known for her Group 1 victories over a mile, including the 1000 Guineas and the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Background

Indian Ink was a bay mare sired by Indian Ridge, a highly successful stallion known for producing top-class sprinters and milers. Her dam was Maid of Killeen, a daughter of the French Derby winner Kenmare. Maid of Killeen was also the dam of the Group 3 winner Mastercraft. Indian Ink was bred by Lodge Park Stud in Ireland. She was owned by Raymond Tooth throughout her racing career and trained by Richard Hannon Sr. at his stable in Wiltshire, England.

Racing Career

Indian Ink competed over three seasons from 2006 to 2008, winning 7 of her 15 starts and accumulating earnings of £663,903.

2006: Two-Year-Old Season

Indian Ink made her debut in May 2006, quickly winning a maiden race at Newbury. After a second-place finish in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes, she secured her first Group 1 victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, a prestigious race for two-year-old fillies. This win marked her as one of the leading juveniles of her generation.

2007: Three-Year-Old Season

As a three-year-old, Indian Ink achieved her most significant success by winning the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, one of Britain's five Classic races. She followed this with a credible second-place finish in the Coronation Stakes (Group 1) at Royal Ascot. Later in the season, she added two more significant victories: the Celebration Mile (Group 2) at Goodwood and her fourth Group 1 success in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. Her performances in 2007 established her as a dominant miler in Europe.

2008: Four-Year-Old Season

Indian Ink's four-year-old season saw her continue to compete at the highest level, though without adding further victories. Her best results included a third-place finish in the Lockinge Stakes (Group 1) and a second in the Windsor Forest Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot. She concluded her racing career in October 2008.

Stud Career

Following her retirement from racing, Indian Ink was retired to stud to begin a career as a broodmare. She has produced several foals, though none have yet achieved the same level of success on the racetrack as their dam.
