Incurvaria pectinea

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Lepidoptera
  • Family: Incurvariidae
  • Genus: Incurvaria
  • Species: Incurvaria pectinea (Haworth, 1828)

Description
Incurvaria pectinea is a small moth with a wingspan typically ranging from 10 mm to 14 mm. The forewings are generally brownish‑grey with a subtle mottling of darker scales and a faint transverse line; the hindwings are paler and somewhat translucent. The species exhibits the characteristic slender body and narrow wing shape of the family Incurvariidae.

Distribution and Habitat
The species is widely distributed throughout temperate Europe. Recorded occurrences include the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Central Europe (e.g., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic), and extending eastward into parts of western Russia. I. pectinea inhabits deciduous woodlands, forest edges, and areas where its primary larval host plants are present.

Biology and Ecology

  • Phenology: Adults are on the wing in early spring, most commonly from March to May, depending on local climate conditions.
  • Reproduction: Females lay eggs on the underside of leaves of suitable host trees.
  • Larval host plants: The larvae are leaf‑mining case‑bearers that feed primarily on birch (Betula spp.). After hatching, the early larva creates a portable case from silk and fragments of leaf tissue, within which it continues feeding on the mesophyll.
  • Development: The larval stage lasts several weeks; pupation occurs within the larval case attached to the host plant or in leaf litter. The species is univoltine (one generation per year).

Conservation Status
Current assessments list Incurvaria pectinea as a species of “Least Concern” in most of its range. It remains relatively common in suitable habitats and does not appear to be subject to significant population declines.
