Route Description
IL 108 primarily serves as a rural two-lane highway, connecting small communities between the Illinois River valley and the Metro East area.
- Western Terminus: The route begins at US 67 north of Carrollton in Greene County.
- Greene County: From its western end, IL 108 travels east through rural Greene County, passing through the village of Greenfield, where it intersects Illinois Route 267.
- Macoupin County: Continuing eastward, IL 108 enters Macoupin County. It passes through the town of Palmyra, then interacts with Illinois Route 111 south of Modesto, and later intersects Illinois Route 4 in Carlinville, the county seat of Macoupin County. East of Carlinville, it passes through White City.
- Madison County: The route then enters Madison County. It crosses Interstate 55 (I-55) near the city of Staunton, though without a direct interchange; an access point is available via local roads. Further east, IL 108 intersects Illinois Route 160 near Hamel. It then continues southeast, eventually meeting its eastern terminus at Illinois Route 159 on the north side of Edwardsville.
History
IL 108 was established in 1924 as part of the original Illinois state highway system. Its original routing largely followed its current alignment, serving as an important connector for the agricultural communities in Greene and Macoupin counties to the larger population centers in Madison County. While there have been minor realignments over the decades to bypass towns or improve road safety, the general path and termini of IL 108 have remained consistent.
