Ikegusuku Antō (池城 親方 安棟; 1??? – 1579), also known by his Chinese-style name Mō Ren (毛 廉), was a bureaucrat and aristocrat of the Ryukyu Kingdom. He held the title of Ueekata (親方), a high-ranking aristocratic rank.
Biography
Ikegusuku Antō was the second head of the aristocratic family known as Mō-uji Ikegusuku Dunchi (毛氏池城殿内). His father was Aragusuku Anki.
Antō served as a member of the Sanshikan, the Council of Three top ministers in the Ryukyu Kingdom, during the reigns of Kings Shō Gen and Shō Ei. In 1569, he was dispatched as a congratulatory envoy to Ming China, together with Sai Chōki, to celebrate the investiture of Crown Prince Zhu Yijun (who later became the Wanli Emperor).
Disappearance
In 1579, Chinese envoys were scheduled to arrive in Ryukyu to formally install Shō Ei as the new king. However, the kingdom was suffering from famine that year. Antō was sent to China to request a postponement of the investiture ceremony. His ship encountered a storm in the East China Sea and disappeared; he was never seen again. He is listed among historical figures who disappeared mysteriously at sea.
