Description
Idalus panamensis is a species of moth belonging to the tiger‑moth subfamily Arctiinae. Like other members of the genus Idalus, it is presumed to possess the typical robust body, narrow forewings, and often brightly coloured or patterned wing surfaces characteristic of arctiine moths. Detailed morphological data—including precise wingspan measurements, coloration patterns, and genitalia structure—are not extensively published in readily accessible taxonomic literature.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is recorded from Panama, from which its specific epithet derives. Occurrence data also suggest a possible presence in adjacent regions of Central America, though confirmed records outside Panama are limited. Idalus species generally inhabit tropical and subtropical forested environments; therefore, I. panamensis is presumed to occupy lowland to montane rainforest habitats where host plants for its larvae are available.
Biology and Ecology
Life‑history information for I. panamensis is sparse. As with many arctiine moths, the larval stage likely feeds on a variety of herbaceous or woody host plants, and adults are probably nocturnal, attracted to light sources. Specific host‑plant associations, adult phenology, and ecological interactions have not been documented in the primary literature.
Taxonomic Notes
The species was first described by the American entomologist William Schaus in 1905, based on specimens collected in Panama. Subsequent revisions of the genus Idalus have retained I. panamensis as a valid species, though few recent taxonomic treatments have revisited its status or provided updated morphological assessments.
