Iba is the capital municipality of the province of Zambales, located in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines. It lies on the western coast of Luzon Island along the South China Sea and serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the province.
Geography
Iba occupies an area of approximately 115.70 square kilometers. The municipality is bounded by the municipalities of Palauig to the north, Subic Bay to the east, and the South China Sea to the west. Its terrain is generally low-lying with a combination of coastal plains, gentle hills, and riverine systems, the most notable being the Iba River which drains into the sea.
History
The settlement that became Iba was founded in 1665 during the Spanish colonial period, originally serving as a small fishing and agricultural community. In 1900, under American administration, Iba was designated as the provincial capital, a status it retains to the present day. The municipality has experienced various historical events, including Japanese occupation during World War II and subsequent post‑war reconstruction.
Demographics
According to the 2020 census conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, Iba has a population of approximately 71,000 residents. The majority of inhabitants are Tagalog speakers, with Ilocano, Kapampangan, and other Philippine languages also present. The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism, reflecting national trends, though other Christian denominations and a minority of Muslims are also represented.
