Definition
Ian Dunn (1940 – 1998) was a Scottish gay rights activist and a pioneering figure in the development of LGBT advocacy and HIV/AIDS support services in Scotland.
Overview
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Dunn became actively involved in the gay rights movement during the early 1970s. In 1974 he co‑founded the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group (SHRG), the first organisation dedicated to campaigning for the de‑criminalisation of homosexual activity and the promotion of gay equality in Scotland. Following the emergence of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Dunn helped establish the Scottish AIDS Forum (now known as the Scottish AIDS Trust) to provide information, support, and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS. Throughout his life he contributed to a range of publications and public debates, working to challenge discrimination and to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Ian” is a Scottish Gaelic form of “John,” meaning “God is gracious.” “Dunn” is a surname of English and Scottish origin, derived from the Old English dunn meaning “dark” or “brown,” often originally a nickname for someone with dark hair or complexion. The combination indicates a personal name typical of the British Isles.
Characteristics
- Activism: Dunn’s work combined grassroots organising, public speaking, and political lobbying. He participated in demonstrations, submitted policy proposals, and engaged with media to advance gay rights and health education.
- Organisational leadership: As a co‑founder of both the SHRG and the Scottish AIDS Forum, he played a central role in shaping the strategic direction, fundraising, and outreach of these bodies.
- Advocacy for legal reform: Dunn contributed to campaigns that culminated in the de‑criminalisation of homosexual acts in Scotland (the Sexual Offences Act 1980) and later supported legislative measures for anti‑discrimination.
- Health education: During the AIDS epidemic, he coordinated information campaigns, supported testing services, and sought to combat stigma associated with the disease.
- Publications: He authored and edited pamphlets and articles addressing gay rights, sexual health, and societal attitudes toward homosexuality and HIV/AIDS.
