Hyundai (Korean: 현대; [çəːndɛ]; meaning "modernity") is a South Korean multinational conglomerate brand that originated as an industrial conglomerate (chaebol) founded by Chung Ju-yung. The name is most widely associated with the Hyundai Motor Company, one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, but the brand encompasses multiple independent business groups that emerged from the original Hyundai Group after corporate restructuring.
Overview
The original Hyundai Group was founded in 1947 as Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company by Chung Ju-yung (1915–2001). Over subsequent decades, it grew into one of South Korea's largest business conglomerates, expanding into automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, heavy industries, electronics, retail, and financial services. Following the Asian financial crisis and internal restructuring, the original conglomerate was split into several independent groups, including:

Hyundai Motor Company
Hyundai Motor Company (KRX: 005380, LSE: HYUD) is the most prominent entity bearing the Hyundai name. Founded on 29 December 1967, it is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea.
History
The company's first model, the Cortina, was produced in cooperation with Ford Motor Company in 1968. In 1975, Hyundai released the Pony, the first South Korean car, designed by Giorgio Giugiaro of Italdesign with powertrain technology from Mitsubishi Motors. Exports began in 1976. Hyundai entered the US market in 1986 with the Excel, which was named "Best Product #10" by Fortune magazine for its affordability.
In 1998, Hyundai acquired a majority stake in rival Kia Motors. Under the leadership of Chung Mong-koo (1999–2020), the company invested heavily in quality, design, and manufacturing, adding a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty in the US. By 2004, Hyundai tied with Honda for initial brand quality in J.D. Power surveys. In 2024, Hyundai became the world's third-largest carmaker by production, behind Toyota and Volkswagen.
Operations
Hyundai operates the world's largest single integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea (established 1968), spanning approximately 5,000,000 m² with an annual capacity of 1.52 million units. The company has manufacturing plants in South Korea, India, the United States (Alabama), Czech Republic, Turkey, Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. As of 2024, Hyundai employed approximately 126,407 people worldwide and sold 4.15 million vehicles globally.
Products
Hyundai produces a full range of vehicles including sedans (Elantra, Sonata, Grandeur), SUVs/crossovers (Tucson, Santa Fe, Creta, Kona, Palisade), electric vehicles (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (Nexo, Xcient Fuel Cell truck), and commercial vehicles. The Tucson was the brand's best-selling model in 2024 with 634,297 units sold globally.
Electric and Hydrogen Vehicles
Hyundai began developing electric vehicles in 1991 and hybrid vehicles in 2008. In 2020, the company launched Ioniq as a dedicated electric vehicle sub-brand. The Ioniq 5, built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), was introduced in 2021 with 800V charging capability. Hyundai also produces the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell SUV and the Xcient Fuel Cell, the world's first production hydrogen fuel cell truck.
Motorsport
Hyundai has competed in the World Rally Championship since 2000 and returned to the series in 2014 through Hyundai Motorsport, based in Alzenau, Germany.
Controversies
Hyundai has faced several controversies, including inflated fuel economy claims (2012, resulting in $350 million in US penalties), a marketing controversy in the UK (2013), vehicle security vulnerabilities exploited in a TikTok theft trend (2022), and child labor allegations involving US parts suppliers in Alabama (2022).
