Description
Hypericum cumulicola is a perennial herb that forms low, tightly packed clumps. Mature stems are typically 15–30 cm tall and unbranched or sparsely branched near the base. Leaves are opposite, sessile, linear‑lanceolate, and measure 5–12 mm long, bearing a few translucent glandular dots characteristic of many Hypericum species. The inflorescence is a simple cyme bearing 1–4 bright yellow flowers, each 8–12 mm in diameter with five petals and numerous stamens arranged in fascicles. The fruit is a small capsule that releases numerous tiny seeds.
Distribution and Habitat
Hypericum cumulicola is endemic to the southeastern United States, occurring primarily in the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee and extending into adjacent parts of Kentucky and Alabama. It is confined to xeric, open habitats such as sand‑rich glades, rocky outcrops, and fire‑maintained pine‑oak savannas. The species prefers well‑drained, acidic to neutral soils and is often found alongside other fire‑adapted flora.
Ecology
The species is adapted to periodic fire, which reduces competition from woody vegetation and maintains the open conditions it requires.
