Hygroplasta monila is a species of moth in the family Lecithoceridae (subfamily Torodorinae). It was first described by Chun-Sheng Wu and Kyu-Tek Park in 1998.
Taxonomy
- Binomial name: Hygroplasta monila Wu & Park, 1998
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Lepidoptera
- Family: Lecithoceridae
- Subfamily: Torodorinae
- Genus: Hygroplasta Meyrick, 1925
The species was described in Insecta Koreana, volume 15 (pages 1–22), within a taxonomic review of the Lecithoceridae of Sri Lanka covering the genera Deltoplastis, Hygroplasta, and Antiochtha. The genus Hygroplasta itself was erected by Edward Meyrick in 1925, with Gelechia spoliatella as its type species.
Distribution
The species is recorded from Sri Lanka. The type locality is given as the Kanneliya Jungle in Sri Lanka, and specimens are reported to have been deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
Description
The wingspan is reported to be about 16 mm. According to secondary sources, the forewings are brown with dark brown, medium-sized discal spots; the pre-apical line is light ochreous and angled inward at about one-third; the hindwings are light brown.
Etymology
The specific epithet is stated to derive from the Latin word monile, meaning "necklace." This derivation is reported by secondary sources citing the original 1998 description.
Recognition and coverage
The species is listed in standard taxonomic databases, including the Catalogue of Life (based on the Global Lepidoptera Index), GBIF, and Wikidata, and it appears in Markku Savela's Lepidoptera and Some Other Life Forms. Subsequent literature citing the species includes Brown, Adamski, Hodges & Bahr (2004, Zootaxa 510: 94) and Park (2014, Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity 7: 118).
The available encyclopedic coverage is limited and largely derives from a small number of primary taxonomic sources. Detailed biological, ecological, and life-history information (such as host plants, immature stages, and behaviour) is not documented in the sources examined.
